Fred Fochtman and Neil Riley, friends and award-winning artists, will conduct a collaborative three-day plein air painting workshop at the the Old Art Building in Leland Michigan. Neil Riley, now living in Vermont, taught painting for 30 years at The Columbus College of Art & Design, and is a gifted observational artist. Fred Fochtman is a Columbus, OH based painter, art restorer, and instructor. These two artists will join forces to provide unique insights into their approaches to plein air sketching and painting, with exercises that will reinforce the fundamentals (and beyond) essential to any well-executed painting.

The workshop will include:

— A presentation each day by the instructors of photo references in advance of each
day’s activities
— A discussion of the importance of value and drawing in all works
— The types of surface preparations that can lead to more successful plein air paintings,
and how to create the surfaces
— Three days of sketching and painting, employing the lessons learned during
— Critiques at the end of each day’s work
— A reception on the last day to chat about art
